Choir Members in District Honor Choir
On Friday and Saturday, February 2nd & 3rd, nine Delphian School students participated
in the District 3 Honor Choir.
The Honor Choir is selected from the nominations of the high school choir directors
in District 3. For the purposes of organizing music events in the state, the Oregon
Music Educators Association has divided the state into 15 districts. District 3
includes schools from the northwest part of Oregon. Fifteen schools participated
at this event, numbering about 120 students in all.
Delphi's representatives included sopranos, Kara Troughton, Megan Price; altos,
Joni Whitworth and Alissa Schneider; tenors, Morgan Buck, Ben Jacobs and Austin
Chen; and basses, Jeremy Moll and Curtis Johnson.
The two days included intensive group and sectional practices where the students
learned five challenging choral pieces that were performed at the end of the day
on Saturday. Delphian choir director Craig Bader ran the tenor sectionals.
Morgan Buck made the semi finals of a solo tryout for an important solo in one of
the songs. Joni Whitworth was selected to sing a short solo in the finale song.
She did a great job closing the concert.
At the end of Friday the final rehearsal was run by Mr. Paul Mayhew, the conductor
chosen to conduct the choir. Our students were very impressed with his method of
rehearsing and his high expectations. Unfortunately, a family emergency prevented
him from coming the next day, and he was replaced by Lisa McIntyre, a very accomplished
high school director from Salem whose choirs frequently place at the top of State
competition in the large high school division. The students really liked her as
well, and the day culminated in a concert performed for an audience of several hundred
family and friends.
It was a great opportunity for our choral students.
