Business Seminar 2003
First Stop: Chicago
Beginning in Chicago, they were hosted by Delphi parent Cheryl Berman, Chief Creative
Officer and Chairman of Leo Burnett USA. Leo Burnett is one of the world's largest
advertising firms. It has produced some of the most enduring advertising campaigns
and helped build more than 500 of the world's leading brands.
Cheryl gave the students full and open access to the entire company, allowing them
to sit in on meetings with her key executives and see all aspects of the company's
operation. The students learned firsthand how a large client, such as McDonald's
or The Disney Company, is fully serviced by Leo Burnettt and the many jobs involved
in the creation and delivery of a successful advertising campaign. One of the many
highlights was seeing (and hearing) a song for Delphi's next summer video start
as an idea and turn into a finished product in Leo Burnett's own recording studio!
Students were amazed at how much the people they met at Leo Burnett loved their
jobs and what they were doing. Summing up his experience at Leo Burnett, Form 7
student Simon Siegel said, "At Leo Burnett, I gained a greater appreciation for
advertising, not as merely an art, but as a business. I saw the whole purpose of
advertising and how important it is to a company's success in business."
Students also visited the Chicago Board of Trade and the Mercantile Exchange, including
a tour of the ultra-high-tech security center of Globex, a 24-hour electronic trading
platform. They attended a Second City comedy performance and visited the Field Museum
in Chicago.
