Delphi Archery Tournament
Saturday, January 13th, eleven archery club members went to the Tigard archery shop
for an indoor tournament. After warming up with practice shots, the students were
divided by age into two groups. Each archer got to shoot six rounds of five arrows
each at bulls-eye targets. Amongst the older group, Spencer Tweed scored the highest,
followed by William Brubaker and Scott Superville. In the younger group Lukas Ott
was first, followed by Brett Horton and Nellie Hecht.
After the formal tournament, balloons were set at random over the target area, and
the groups got to shoot at them alternately in rapid fashion. Group 1 would step
up to the line and each archer would let loose one arrow at whatever balloon he
wanted to shoot at. Then Group 1 would step back, and Group 2 would step up to the
line and each fire one arrow. Group 1 would reload while Group 2 was shooting and
would be ready to step up to the line and immediately shoot when Group 2 stepped
back. They did this until most of the balloons were popped.
For the final several balloons, all the archers squeezed together on the line and
shot simultaneously "volley style", all targeting the same balloon until they were
all popped.
